Manche Alben müssen lange reifen. Fast dreißig Jahre macht der in Köln lebende englische Singer/Songwriter bereits Musik. Doch erst jetzt, mit 48, veröffentlicht er seine erste Platte. Aber das Warten hat sich gelohnt. Selbst Bob Dylan könnte sich von den neun Songperlen noch das eine oder andere abschauen. Aufgewachsen mit dem klassischen Blues, besticht Matthew Robb durch musikalische Arrangements, die durch ihre Schlichtheit mitreißen. Aus Gesang, akustischen Gitarren und Harp erklingt die große Folktradition des amerikanischen Westens. Doch es sind vor allem Robbs Texte mit großem Tiefgang, die seine Kompositionen so brandaktuell machen. Wie ein roter Faden zieht sich durch seine Lieder die Desillusion der Menschen der Wohlstandsgesellschaft. Da singt der Songpoet vom Alkoholtod eines engen Freundes, von moderner Sklaverei, von immer wieder aufgeschobenen guten Vorsätzen zur Veränderung, von zunehmender Gier und Hass. Trotz aller Melancholie strahlen Robbs Songs, wie etwa in „River“, jedoch auch eine große Hoffnung aus, dass den Menschen eine Kraft innewohnt, die innere Last abzulegen: „There is a river that runs through you.“

His voice, guitar and harp awaken the great traditional folk music of the American west. Without exception though, it’s the profound scope and depth of his lyrics that really make the compositions so contemporary and outstanding, Like a thread running through the album, the songpoet speaks to the disillusionment of people living amongst the greed, procrastination and general malaise of a materialistic society, with themes as varied as modern day slavery and the death of a close friend from alchoholism. However, despite this meloncholic backdrop, Robb’s songs radiate a great hope that within mankind there lies a strength to lay that burden down.
